Giro Eyewear Launches Sport Performance Sunglasses

Designed and Engineered for Riders

On the heels of Alberto Contador’s stunning overall victory at the 2007 Tour de France while using Giro’s new Havik™ model sunglass, Giro®, the global leader in cycling and action sports helmets and an emerging brand in the sport eyewear category, announced the launch of their 2008 collection of sport performance sunglasses.

Giro’s collection of sport performance sunglasses will debut at the Eurobike tradeshow in Friedrichshaffen, Germany August 30th – September 2nd, and the Interbike tradeshow in Las Vegas from September 26th – 28th. The collection features four models: a sport shield style called Havik™; a half-entrapped sport style called Bootleg™; and two fully-entrapped styles, Instigator™ and Convert™. Prices will range from $89.00 - $169.00 depending on style and lens choices, with availability at specialty cycling, snow and other select retailers starting in October 2007.

"We considered every detail to insure rider inspired, world class product" said Aaron Brookes, Giro Business Unit Manager. "From True Sight(TM) technology to enhance visual performance, to Super Fit(TM) engineered frames to optimize helmet compatibility, to a compelling design identity - every detail benefits the user."

Every Giro sunglass will feature Giro's True Sight(TM) Technology which emphasizes three key benefits for athletes: distortion-free optics across a full visual field; a full range of lens tint options that block 100% of harmful UV; and advanced lens technologies like Dura Clean(TM), a hydrophobic hardcoating process that repels water, oils and debris that can compromise vision. In addition, Giro has an exclusive agreement with Carl Zeiss Vision Sunlens, producer of the world's finest eyeglass and sunglass lenses and precision optics for over 100 years, to offer Zeiss Certified True Sight(TM) lenses as an option throughout the collection. This special collaboration gives consumers all of the benefits of Giro’s True Sight Technology plus the ultimate guarantee of optical purity that only Zeiss can offer. To guarantee that every Zeiss Certified True Sight lens meets Zeiss’ singular standards, each lens is made in proprietary Zeiss molds and checked for optical quality and compliance to very precise manufacturing specifications, before being engraved with the unique "Z" and shipped with a certificate of authenticity that ensures the performance of the lenses.

Beyond class-leading optical performance, Giro sunglasses were designed to provide maximum comfort and stability during high-intensity activities like cycling. Using their proprietary Super Fit™ Engineering process, which has been  developed from more than 20 years of anatomic research and rider feedback, Giro designed every model to complement the human face while fitting seamlessly with a variety of helmet styles. Performance features like ventilated rubber nose pads, rubber temple tips and sleek, RX compatible sport wrap frame styles ensure that any rider can enjoy a new level of comfort, clarity and confidence.

With such a dedicated focus on providing riders with the best performance, comfort and optical clarity, Giro is attracting a diverse team of eyewear-sponsored riders across many sports. In addition to 2007 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, Giro Eyewear is also proud to sponsor popular French pro cyclist Nicolas Portal of the Caisse d'Epargne Cycling Team, Benjamin Noval of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, Ludovic Turpin of the Ag2R Team, and former Tour de France stage winner Patrice Halgand of the Credit Agricole Team; Two-time Crankworx Mountain Bike Slopestyle Champion Paul Basagoitia; Top Cyclocross and Mountain Bike racer Barry Wicks; top Triathlete Rutger Beke of Belgium; Two-time X-Games Snowboard Halfpipe Gold Medalist Steve Fisher; 2002 Olympic Women’s Snowboard Halfpipe Gold Medalist Kelly Clark; X-Games Best Ski Halfpipe Trick winner Peter Olenick; and more.
